It was, as the saying goes, the start of a beautiful friendship. The occasion was the 25th anniversary of the Kronos Quartet, and among the gifts the ensemble received for this most auspicious occurrence was Potassium—the first work for string quartet by Michael Gordon, a composer widely admired for the raw, visceral intensity of his music. The piece was commissioned by the Kronos board of directors, and had its premiere in San Francisco, the ensemble’s hometown, on March 16, 2001.
