The Smile is a supergroup comprised of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead (plus their producer Nigel Godrich) alongside Tom Skinner, the drummer from Sons of Kemet. It was initially formed during a lockdown Livestream in May 2021, and one year later, in May 2022, they released a fantastic first album, A Light for Attracting Attention. The trio got together on the 12th of July on stage at the Montreux Jazz Lab to give a live performance in front of 12,000 people—the best moments of which are shown here. The record starts with ‘Pana-vision’, a track that perfectly sets the scene for the album by juxtaposing Thom Yorke’s laments and Skinner’s percussive rhythms. After ‘Thin Thing’, which can be a bit messy at times, there’s the groovy ‘The Opposite’, with a mental riff from Greenwood. This track is unstoppable and confirms that these three musicians are the perfect match. The only downside is that the new song ‘Bending Hectic’, which the band composed that same day in Montreux, is missing from the tracklist. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
