Pianist Emmet Cohen has been a firm fixture of the US jazz scene since the early 2010s (the first release he fronted, In the Element, was back in 2011). His profile has grown considerably in recent years following the success of his weekly ‘Live from Emmet’s Place’ concert series—streamed via video during lockdown—and his acclaimed 2021 album, Future Stride, his first release for the Mack Avenue label.
He’s back now with Uptown in Orbit, a reference to Duke Ellington’s famous Blues in Orbit. Like his previous work, this album stands out since its sound is anchored in a differential, academic and modernist relationship with the jazz tradition. Here, he’s at the head of his regular trio once again (composed of double bassist and composer Russell Hall and drummer Kyle Poole, who also produced the session). However, this time they benefit from the magic touch of trumpeter Sean Jones and alto saxophonist Patrick Bartley on half the tracks. Emmet Cohen skilfully intertwines a number of beautifully crafted original compositions with a stylistically varied range of covers.
From the new lease of life given to Willie “The Lion” Smith’s stride piano (‘Finger Buster’), the impressionistic sophistication of Gerry Mulligan’s ‘Venus de Milo’, the pure hard-bop of Cedar Walton’s ‘Mosaic’, to one of Count Basie’s big band favourites (‘Lil Darlin%27), Emmet Cohen has created an album brimming with aesthetic coherence, fluidity and harmonic refinement.
