详细介绍:

For a solid decade now, music has played a major role at the Château de Versailles, just as it did during the time of Louis XIV. In his day, between the Royal Opera and the Royal Chapel, almost a hundred performances each year contributed to a musical tradition which served as a showcase for the political powers of France. It all recommenced in 1987, with the erection of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles by Vincent Berthier de Lioncourt and Philippe Beaussant. With this, the French musical heritage of the Baroque period, which had been neglected up until then, was rediscovered, restored and published.

Created in 2018, in the wake of this revival, the Château de Versailles Spectacles record label pays homage to the past by honouring the major musical events which had taken place within those prestigious walls. They now have released approximately forty recordings, CDs and DVDs are available, with new publications being released regularly. One such example is this album, dedicated to the great motets by Jean-Joseph Cassanéa de Mondonville; performed by the Chœur & Orchestre Marguerite Louise Marguerite Louise and conducted by Gaétan Jarry.

Marguerite Louise (1676-1728) was a widely adored singer and cousin of François Couperin and is the inspiration behind this ensemble, founded by Gérard Jarry in 2015. According to her contemporaries, her singing radiated with “great lightness and wonderful taste”. The Marguerite Louise Ensemble, who put their own spin on the French repertoire, first dedicated themselves to Charpentier before collaborating regularly with the Royal Opera’s opera productions.

This production was recorded over two sessions, with the aid of the Chapelle Royale’s stunning acoustics. It’s devoted to Mondonville’s choir motets, which represent the apex of the great versions that were created under Louis XIV. This sacred music combined piety with royal pomp and, over the following century, it spread to wider audiences and was very well-received. This interpretation, delivered by Gérard Jarry alongside his singers and musicians, beautifully demonstrates the theatrics and drama so characteristic of Mondonville’s music, whose vigour and power of expressivity always succeeds in lifting the spirits. © François Hudry/Qobuz
